Ultimate Fitness Gym - Sacramento, California

Written by Steve "Spaniard" Valentine

Sacramento, CA - Downtown I street was lining up for another installment of amateur Mixed Martial Arts competition at Ultimate Fitness gym, home of former WEC champ Urijah Faber and Team Alpha Male. California is slowly but surely creating an amateur division for up and coming studs to showcase and tighten their MMA skills. Fighters are given three, two minute rounds to get a tap; but even so neither competitor gets the W. It was a little strange when at the end neither fighter won, and both fighters had their hands raised; but it made my job a little easier as I didn't have to worry about recording exact results. Head Gear is worn to protect the fighters, yet it consistently created issues with trying to secure submissions as gear tends to get a little twisted in action; and some fighters were left blind as the ref had to kindly adjust the head gear as he saw fit.

The show incorporated some Kick boxing exhibitions that had the crowd on their feet. Team Buhawe fighter Dominic Escamilla put on a strong performance with leg kicks and one-two combos on Ultimate fitness fighter Garrett Wallace. Wallace kept the fight pressing and opened up some good boxing, landing combinations and counter punches. Joel Schwellenbach landed a devastating left hook on fighter Jason Burks in another kickboxing exhibition. Burks landed some nice leg kicks, but Joel was just too much for the fellow Ultimate Fitness teammate.

Andrew Blankenship, from team Black Ninja, and Jeremy Braun from Ultimate fitness went to war both landing devastating strikes back and forth as Blankenship landed several leg kicks to the left side of Braun's stomach, causing Braun to wince and stop in pain, yet just when you thought Braun was fading he came back with strong punches bloodying Blankenship keeping the fight pretty even. Both of these guys put it all on the line as this would be my "Fight of the Night" choice.

Karsten DeSario and Mario Soto, both Ultimate Fitness fighters, got taps from their opponents, as DeSario sunk an arm-bar in under three minutes and Soto finished with a Rear Naked Choke. Another nice Rear Naked Choke came from Hangtown Fighter Bear Hooper who forced Juan Acevedo to tap or nap in the early first round. One of the quickest Submissions came from Ultimate Fitness fighter Danny Mullen, who sunk a Rear Naked Choke on LA Boxing fighter Josh Bettencourt in a speedy fashion to get the tap. Piranha Perales from Team Buhawe fought twice winning both fights by submission in second round beating Aaron Anda by Arm-bar, and Chris Barbosa by Rear Naked Choke, both guys coming from Team LA Boxing.

Juan Aguilar, Scott Nelson, and Jesse Richardson, all fighting out of Ultimate Fitness, and all going the distance in wars kept the crowd restless for more. Augilar fought Chad Chow who came up with some nice reversals and kept the fight close. Nelson fought Daniel Johan from Ultimate Training Center in Roseville, California; both guys were pretty even as Nelson looked for leg kicks and Johan was more straight punching stuffing Nelsons takedown attempts. And Richardson took on Team Buhawe Fighter George Moreno as both of these guys were very evenly matched, both landing shots and pushing the pace. The show was another victory in the record books for Amateur MMA action in California, and hopefully we will see more of these events helping the inexperienced guys get some combat time. A couple rule tweaks and the amateur division will be a force to reckon with in California
