Spokane Showdown 3 - Results and Photos - June 23rd, 2007

East Central Community Center - Spokane, Washington

Review by RW Pegau, Photos by Alfredo LLamedo

East Central Community Center once again held audience to the 3rd installment of Spokane Showdown. The event boasted 11 MMA fights, 1 grappling exhibition, and 1 kickboxing exhibition. Teams attending the competition included: Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane, TKO Fighting Arts, Sik Jitsu, Team Execution, and a few independent fighters. The product of local BJJ black belt Bart Smith, Spokane Showdown is rapidly becoming one of the amateur MMA staples in the Spokane area. The event saw a crowd of about 300 spectators and its first ever Welter weight champion. All in all, Spokane Showdown 3 was a good event, with most matches being very close in weight and experience levels, a point that promoter Smith takes pride in. Their next event is scheduled for August 18th and any fighters interested are urged to check out www.northwestfighting.com

Spokane Showdown MMA Welterweight Title Fight
Lyle "Fancy Pants" Beerbohm def Nick Ecklund by Guillotine in Rd 2

Battling for the vacant Welterweight title was Spokane's 8-0 Beerbohm and Wyoming's 5-2 Ecklund. Ecklund would have his work cut out for him taking on the undefeated scrapper. Not to mention his contingent of fans that took up almost an entire section of reserved seats. Most of whom were wearing some sort of Beerbohm shirt or hat. Beerbohm was true to his nick name of "fancy pants" as he stripped off his warm-ups to reveal fight shorts that looked like some sort of silver lined disco fiasco with some good old' red white and blue thrown in. The fight was not quite as flashy as both these fighters had skills that cancelled each other out to start with. From the bell you could see that Ecklund would be content to strike from the outside, throwing a quick jab and then backing out, while Beerbohm intently looked for a takedown. Beerbohm shot in and was able to power his challenger to the ground where the action slowed for a while. Both fighters did very well in limiting the other's attacks. Though Ecklund did keep his opponent from really damaging him while on top, he wasn't able to really make space or go for submissions. Beerbohm controlled the remainder of the round with neither fighter looking hurt or fatigued. The second round played out much like the first with Beerbohm quickly getting a takedown and into guard. This time his strikes seem to hit their mark a little more. Ecklund was more mobile on the bottom and during a scramble was able to get back to his feet, but got caught in a standing Guillotine. The tap out came midway thru the second round with Lyle Beerbohm becoming the 1st Spokane Showdown Welterweight Champion.
