The Big Easy - Spokane, Washington

Review By RW Pegau

With an attendance of about 800, the Big Easy Concert House was jam packed with people eager to get another installment of the PFA's Ultimate Cage Fighting. Promoters Derek Cleveland and Trevor Prangley put on another solid show that included two championship bouts.

Dan Ginerich, Independent, 141 vs. Joseph Cleveland, Lion's Den, 135
Cleveland was going to have to put on quite a show to out do his entrance theme. It looked like Night at the Roxbury meets Jay Z in "Big Pimpin". Luckily for him, he was able to back up his hype. Cleveland opens with a big slam. Ginerich tries to get a guillotine, but Cleveland reverses. He then gets another takedown and transitions to his opponents back. He flattens Ginerich out and pounds out a TKO victory from back mount. Ginerich was totally stuck and offered no complaint when the ref stopped the fight. Cleveland by TKO (ref stoppage due to strikes) round 1.

Steve Sing, Independent, 140 vs. Jason Smith, Lion's Den, 135
Sing gets the takedown. Smith scrambles to guard and immediately gets a tight armbar. Sing can't tap quickly enough and is visibly hurt from the submission. Smith moves over to see if his opponent is ok and eventually Sing gets up on his own, though he is still cradling his arm. Smith by armbar round 1.

Ethan Rhodes, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane, 155 vs. Matt Swift, TKO Punishment, 157
Rhodes with a vicious looking double leg takedown that drops Swift right on his head. Swift is able to get guard, but Rhodes is still in control. Rhodes unloads a fury of punches and swift gives up his back. Rhodes sinks in a fight ending RNC round 1.

Corey Moss, 509 Fight Club, 155 vs. Josh Faram, Lion's Den, 152
Moss took this fight on just a few hours notice and it showed. He looked ill prepared to deal with Faram. Moss and Faram trade while standing. Faram lands a couple hard kicks and punches. A kick lands to Moss's body and he is hurt. He attempts a double leg but Faram sprawls. Faram then starts reigning punches down on Moss. Moss takes lots of shots before tapping out. Faram by submission (strikes) round 1.

Isaiah Williams, Independent, 158 vs. John Reese, Lion's Den, 164
I don't think that you could pack any more muscle into the frame of John Reese. This guy is stacked. They looked like they were in totally different weight classes. Williams comes out the more aggressive. Reese gets a takedown into guard. Williams tries for an armbar but Reese powers out of it. The 1st round ends with Reese punching inside Williams' guard while defending armbar attempts.
Round 2 starts and Williams immediately shoots. Reese stuffs it and sprawls to top position. Reese looks tired and is just lying on Williams. The ref calls for more action. Reese then is able to reverse to mount but Williams escapes. Both fighters look very tired for the duration of the 2nd round.
Round 3 starts with a Reese takedown. Neither fighter looking fresh. The ref restarts then on their feet. Reese shoots again and this time Williams is able to catch him in a tight guillotine. They fall to the ground and Williams get the tap out win by guillotine choke early in round 3.

Austin Peeker, TKO Punishment, 176 vs. Greg Benjamin, Lion's Den, 175
Both come out aggressive. Benjamin gets the takedown but neither fighter is able to do much. Some sporadic punches here and there, and the round ends. Neither fighter looks damaged.
Round 2 starts with both fighters trading. Benjamin gets to the clinch and they battle along the fence. Benjamin eventually gets the takedown into Peeker's guard and the action stalls. Peeker is content to just hold on and Benjamin doesn't try to move out of guard.
Round 3. Benjamin gets an early takedown then immediately mounts his opponent. Peeker uses the fence to reverse the position and gets side control. He throws down a flurry of punches and is able to move to mount. From here he puts a tiring Benjamin away with punches from mount. Peeker by TKO (ref stoppage due to strikes) round 3.

Chris Gardner, TKO Punishment, 157 vs. Cody Cox, Lion's Den, 150
Cox ties up immediately. They battle along the fence for position with Cox keeping a body lock on Gardner. Cox is able to get around to his opponents back and sinks in a deep RNC while standing. Gardner is forced to tap while standing from the choke. Cox by RNC round 1.

Gary Stone, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane, 181 vs. Will Noland, Lion's Den, 183
Stone pulls guard after a brief exchange on their feat. They move positions multiple times before a scramble back to their feat. Noland then lands some heavy leather to a backpedaling Stone. He lands some knees and then another right hand that drops Stone to the mat. Noland lays on some heavy unanswered shots to a turtled Stone and the ref stops it. Noland by TKO (ref stoppage due to strikes) round 1.

Middleweight Title Fight
Jerid Camyn, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane, 185 vs. Levi Alford, TKO Punishment, 185
Camyn might just be the biggest 185 pounder this side of Trevor Prangley. This guy is huge. Alford on the other hand is a very slender looking guy who weighs 185 only because he is 6'5". A distinct reach advantage for his weight class. Camyn gets a quick takedown and leaves an arm exposed. Alford gets the arm and it looks tight, but Camyn is able to power out of it by picking Alford and slamming him into the ground multiple times to break the hold. Camyn is pure power and aggression. Alford looks calm and keeps trying to attack the arms of his wild eyed opponent. Alford tries again for an armbar and Camyn again defends by lifting him high into the air and slamming him down. This time, Alford scrambles from the slam and gets the arm even tighter. It looks really tight as he moves his hips into the move. Camyn is flat on his back now and has no choice but to tap out. Alford wins by armbar round 1. Alford becomes the Middleweight Champion.

Heavyweight Title Fight
Miguel Alvarez, Independent, 231 vs. Josh Queen, Lion's Den, 262
Queen unloads on Alvarez and drops him with punches and knees. Queen thinks it is over and starts to back away. The ref says it is still on. Alvarez tries to get back to his feat and Queen floors him with a vicious right hand. Alvarez is done, this time with no question. Queen by TKO (punch) round 1. Queen maintains his HW title.

It was a rough night for anyone who was not from the Lion's Den as their team went 6-2 for the evening. The other teams were as follows:
Independents 1-3
TKO Punishment 2-2
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Spokane 1-2
Lion's Den 6-2
509 Fight Club 0-1
