Interview with Jason Gybels - April 23rd 2011

Interview by Spaniard, Photos by Warren Anderson

Jason Gybels fighting with the Desert Dogs in Bend, Oregon talks to NWFS about the biggest win yet in his pro career, a 3rd Rd submission of Charles "Crazy Horse" Bennett in an incredible main event at UCS "Caged Combat III" on April 16th.

NW Fightscene: The fight went through a couple of people before it got to you. How excited were you when you found out you were going to fight Crazy Horse?
Jason Gybels: I can't even explain how excited I was. To fight somebody who's been through what he's been through, it was just amazing to hear that I was going to fight him. Words can't really explain it.

NWFS: Talk about your training for Crazy Horse.
Gybels: I didn't do anything new for this fight. it just got a lot more intense. JT just pushed me to my limit every time he possibly could. And I knew that I had to push myself beyond where I've gone before, stepping up to a person like Crazy Horse.

NWFS: You're training with JT Taylor and the Desert Dogs. Your Jiu-jitsu definitely played a big part in the fight. Talk about JT and where you guys train at.
Gybels: We train out of Bend Oregon. We have a nice little gym. We go in and get pretty rowdy. And JT, the guy's amazing with what he knows and the hell he can put you through.

NWFS: Getting ready for the fight?
Gybels: Yeah, the stuff he can show you and teach you is phenomenal really. All the guys I train with, we have a good group of guys. A good variety. Some wrestlers, strikers, some guys that are just really good grapplers. And they all beat me up pretty good getting me ready for this fight.

NWFS: In the fight, you got cut. Which eye and where did you get cut?
Gybels: I got cut on the left orbital, right outside my orbital socket on the left side of my face. Got five stitches too.

NWFS: What caused it?
Gybels: In the fight it looks like he got me with a right hook and it dropped me. And he thought he was going to finish me and he started a little flurry on the ground. So I believe it was from that right hook. But I'm not sure. Like a car accident, you're never really sure what happened.

NWFS: Now the ref let it go on and you continued to fight. There was a lot of blood. Do you think the blood made it easier or harder in terms of your jiu-jitsu?
Gybels: (laughs) It didn't help my jiu-jitsu at all. Man, it made everything so slippery. With the sweat and the blood. It made every thing very difficult.

NWFS: It seemed he was really hard to submit. Do you think that was just the blood made it easier for him to get out of all that?
Gybels: Yes and no. He's just a very, very tough individual. He's fought so many tough people and I'm sure I'm not the first jiu-jitsu person he's ever come across. He's just a tough guy. The blood and sweat and everything, that definitely helped him get out of a few situations, but he was just a tough opponent and he didn't want to give up.

NWFS: People have already been talking about fight of the year. Has that been resonating in your ears at all?
Gybels: I haven't heard about that at all but it is still April. Quite a few fights to go down. I would definitely take it though, it would be an honor to get that.

NWFS: Well its definitely setting a precedent for the rest of the year. Do you have any other fights set to go?
Gybels: There's talk here and there. Nothing set in stone yet. Just healing up. Not really thinking about fighting.

NWFS: How is your body after that fight?
Gybels: The biggest thing was that cut. Then things that you might find four or five days later, like "Wow! That's sore?" or "That hurts." Just the aftermath of going through a fight like that.

NWFS: Who would you like to thank?
Gybels: Like to thank JT and the Desert Dogs. Max Muscle. Elite Fitness. My family, I love them to death. And all the fans who came out to watch who support me and who support MMA.
