Desert Brawl 28 "Pride" - May 17th, 2008

Indoor Soccer Arena - Bend, Oregon

Post-fight Review by Steve "Spaniard" Valentine

Saturday night at the indoor soccer arena in Central Oregon, Desert Brawl 28 exploded with amateur Mixed Martial Arts action. Team REACT fighter Derek "Iron Man" Jones retained his Desert Brawl 185 lb Title by tapping fighter Leo McDonald with a tight rear naked choke after landing some knees, and a nice right hand in the third round. Leo McDonald wasn't giving up as he escaped a close arm-bar in the first round and took punishment throughout the fight,  escaping each time and frustrating Jones as he tried numerous times to put the challenger to rest. Jones showed some improved stand up and finished with the RNC at 1:14 in round three.

Justin "The Freight Train" Fratto scored a quick submission victory for the Desert Dog Fight Team as he defended his 145lb belt against Redneck Militia fighter Will Hunt. Hunt came out strong trying to overpower a smaller Fratto, but as Fratto got both under hooks he switched from belly to back to a standing rear naked choke as he pulled Hunt to the ground and tightened up the choke forcing Hunt to tap at 1:07 in round one.

The Desert Dog Fight team had some emotional issues in the next match as both fighters were Dogs and were training partners as well. There were some rumors about the fight being cancelled due to lack of a belt showing up, but both Dogs showed and only one Dog was going to get the belt. Current champ Tomi "Last Minute" Massey was all smiles as he stared at the challenger Calvin Allen. Both fighters came out swinging as Massey landed a sick superman punch to the jaw of Allen. Allen landed a punch in return that forced Massey to a takedown, and from there it was all Massey. Massey mounted Allen, and then went for an arm as he trapped Allen and pounded him in some pretty bad places. In the scramble Allen got to his feet only to get viciously slammed back to the ground by Massey. Allen got hurt in the slam, but as any fighter should, Massey did his job and finished the fight throwing punches until referee Steve Newport stepped in and called the fight at 2:41 in round one.

The other scheduled title fight was cancelled as David White was injured before stepping up to face Jake Albino. This fight will probably be added to the next DB card in August. Team REACT/Bend Jiu-Jitsu went 4-0 in competition, fighter Brent Gibson scored a huge knockout over Desert Dog Mike Sharp at 1:07 in round two. BJJ fighter Logan Novack tapped Vincent Mcay with a Rear Naked Choke at 1:31 in the second round as well. And Peter Harris sunk a tight guillotine on Desert Dog fighter Joel Toledo in 2:02 in round 2.

In other action, Mike Masroffini tapped Desert Dog fighter Gary Thompson at 2:06 in round 2 and Eathan Laird defeated Joe Sanchez as referee Hopi Jenkins put a stop to the fight at 1:30 in round one.

Desert Brawl plans on having another show in August. Check back with NWFightScene.com for more details. Desert Brawl is a JT Taylor and Isaac Kitashima production.
