Desert Brawl's Thursday Night Fights Review - April 12th, 2007

Midtown Rock Rink and Roll - Bend, Oregon

Press Release from the promoter

Written by Steve "Spaniard" Roberts

Thursday night brought some cage fighting action to Bend Oregon at the Midtown Music

Hall. Former DesertBrawl champ and current IFL fighter John Gunderson made a guest appearance to talk about his upcoming fight for Ken Shamrock's Lions. And the

DesertBrawl ring girls were showing their stuff getting the crowd pumped as the

show aired live on www.MMAPPV.com.

The main event and the only decision of the night. Desert Dog fighter Talon Hoffman defeated Lions Den fighter Ashe Bowman in a tough battle of wills. Round one Hoffman came out and ducked a strike to secure double under hooks and get the takedown. Hoffman got takedowns all night long and escaped numerous heel hooks and knee bar attempts by Bowman. Both fighters secured a top position but were unable to due to much damage since both had great guards which caused referee Dave Hagen to keep standing the fight up. This fight was great and both fighters gave it their absolute all; yet in the end Talon was awarded the unanimous decision due to a non-stop takedown clinic and numerous submission escapes.

The semi-main event was hometown hero Hopi "Ninja" Jenkins taking on Anchorage Alaska native Josh Rivas. Rivas immediately got the takedown and started working for ground position and kneeing Hopi as Hopi was trying to turn out from the cage and maneuver out, but Rivas held top position until the ref stood them up for no action. After that it was all Ninja. This time the Ninja got the takedown and landed in side mount. From there Hopi trapped his right arm with his legs then trapped his left arm with his hand and started to beat him like he stole something with hammer fist and punches until Rivas tapped at 3:41 of the first round.

Tomi "Last Minute" Massey defeated Josh LeGrange by tap out at 2:01 in the first round to become the new lightweight amateur champion. Massey came out with some nice Muay Thai leg kicks and then almost sunk a guillotine choke but LeGrange popped out only to get caught in a very tight triangle courtesy of Desert Dog Jiu-jitsu. Massey rolled LeGrange over and pounded him out quickly to become DesertBrawl's new top amateur 155lb fighter.

Scott Piatt defeated Robby Vanryan by referee stoppage in 54 seconds of the first round

by a viscous belly to back slam that almost broke his neck. Fortunately Vanryan was ok

and helped out of the cage by a medical staff.

Nick Braker fought Jarod Mathews for the second time as a last minute replacement for

the DesertBrawl Heavyweight Amateur title. Braker was all over Mathews taking his back,

taking side mount, and even standing straight up off the ground in a display of power

and skill. Braker was still too much for Mathews as he won the Title at 3:48 in

round one by rear-naked choke.

Jeremy Free got back to his winning ways by defeating Calvin Allen by arm-bar at 3:32

in round one. Free kept to his wrestling background and went for the takedown but

had a hard time finishing Allen. Free went for Allen's back but ended up in mount and

it seemed as if Free wasn't damaging Allen, but then Free grabbed an arm and rolled

over on top of it to take the win.

Desert Dog fighters Ryan "Mad Dog" Fulton and Justin Fratto both earned TKO victories in less than two minutes. Fratto defeated debuting fighter Justin Grinstead at 1:34 in the first round after mounting and pounding Grinstead till the ref stepped in, and Fulton defeated debuting fighter John Wetsel at 1:17 in round one after sinking a triangle and rolling on top to punch away at the face of Wetsel till Dave Hagen stepped in and called the fight. Referee Dave Hagen had a busy night saving fighters from inescapable positions like the ones both of these fighters were put in and stopped all fights at perfect times.

In other action, Ty Sharp defeated Bobby Blanchard in 39 seconds of the first round by tap out due to pain from torn knee or something from the takedown. Fighter Matt Connent defeated Harley Slocum by choke at 2:49 in round one, and Dean Myers scored a TKO against Royce Simpson at 4:14 in round one as well. If you missed the action make sure to check out www.MMAPPV.com for re-broadcasting of the show. Thursday Night Fights is a JT Taylor & Chris Fought production
