Capitol City Cage Fights II - Nov 4th, 2006

Salem National Guard Armory  - Salem, Oregon

Review by Steve "Spaniard" Roberts

On Saturday November 4, Team Chaos invaded the Salem Oregon Armory for

Capital City Cage Fights II. This show is adding up to be a great addition to

amateur Mixed Martial Arts in Oregon. The house was jammed packed as fighters

and fight teams prepared for action, and Vicious Fight Gear and Gladiator Fight Gear

where just a couple of the vendors throwing out free gear, and Northwest Fight Scene

Magazine was in full force with the new release of issue one. The show's main event

saw Team Chaos's Peter Aspinwall defend and retain his Middleweight title against

Shaun Johnson from the Desert Dogs out of Bend Oregon.

Round one was pretty fast paced and Aspinwall took Johnson down pretty quick to

work some ground game. Johnson was pivoting off the cage with his to avoid being

smashed against the cage. Aspinwall landed a couple of hard lefts and was in

complete control. Aspinwall eventually sunk a tight arm-bar that Johnson couldn't

escape at 1:52 in round one. It seems to be a Desert Dog curse being created in

Salem, because Johnson had broken his collar bone on the way down to the mat

and the same thing happened to Brian Tyler when he fought Nick Braker. Tyler

later vindicated himself at BaseBrawls in Bend Oregon, only time will tell if

Johnson can do the same.

Another great fight performance from Dave Culbertson fighting out of Team Chaos.

Culbertson is undefeated and looks to be a force in the welterweight division.

Culbertson beat a very tough and scrappy Charles Bell who came out swinging and

actually landed a flush knee that swole Culbertson's eye up a bit. After a failed

guillotine attempt Bell was in some serious trouble as Culbertson mounted him and

started to rain down punches. Referee Steve Newport stepped in and called the

fight by TKO at 1:42 of the first round.

David Quinton from Straight Blast Gym out Portland Oregon defeated Team Chaos

fighter Matt Slosser by unanimous decision. The fight saw a lot of clinch work and

some stalling. Referee Steve Newport separated the fighters numerously, and most

of the fight was Quinton taking Slosser down. Not much damage was inflicted on

either part but in the end Quinton won the unanimous decision because of

takedowns and ground control.

Team Quest went undefeated with instructor and IFL fighter Chris Wilson at the helm.

Fighter Cody Bras took out Team Chaos fighter Jake McKnight. Round one we saw

both fighters going at it until Bras got the take down and almost took McKnight's back,

but McKnight went out the back door back to guard and the round was pretty much a

draw. Round two we saw Bras sit right into a mount position and McKnight trying to

go out the back door again, but this time Bras sunk a tight rear naked choke at 0: 44

of round two to get the win.

Another Team Quest win came from a very tough Dave Jansen who went the

distance with Independent fighter Corey Hall. These Lightweight fighters went to

war, and were in great shape. Jansen stuffed a couple of take downs attempts by

Hall and went to work on some original Team Quest ground and pound, but he

was unable to finish Hall. Both fighters fought a great fight and in my opinion fought

the best fight of the night. But, in the end the judges gave the unanimous decision

to Dave Jansen who controlled most of the fight.

Nick Braker went straight to work on Larry Vandervort after he heard Vandervort say behind the scenes that "he would KO Braker in less than 40 seconds." Braker immediately went for the take down and started landing some shots from half guard, but didn't do much damage. Braker pulled Vandervort up with a guillotine choke, and this time it was Braker turn to fight off his back. Braker then reversed his position and eventually ended in a triple threat position and started landing some hard hammer fist that put Vandervort's arm straight up high in defense and Braker gladly took it to win the fight by arm-bar at 2:36 in the first round.

All in all the show was a success, and the crew of Team Chaos will be making their mark on Salem Oregon. Special Thanks to Denver, Chris, Gumby, and everybody at Team Chaos for all the access and support of NW FightScene Magazine. Capitol City Cage Fights is a Team Chaos production.
