Super Brawl Sunday - April 6th, 2014

Snoqualmie Casino - Snoqualmie, Washington

Recap by Mike Renouard

On April 6th, Combat Games MMA made their triumphant return to the Snoqualmie Casino in Snoqualmie WA after more than a year away, holding 6 pro and 3 amateur bouts in their first ever Sunday show at the casino, entitled Super Brawl Sunday.

The main event was a much anticipated 170 lb matchup between veteran Bristol Marunde, who was making his first cage appearance after being released by the UFC, and rising star Ian "The Mule" Willams who entered the cage with an 8-1 record. However, this turned into one of the shortest fights on the night as the experienced Marunde ducked a Williams punch, took him down, and after a bit of positioning, locked on a fight-ending kimura submission at the 1:29 mark of the first round. Marunde took home the Combat Games MMA Pro 170 lb Title with the win.

The most impressive performance of the night came from Jacob Boysen of Ivan Salaverry MMA who took on a Twisted Gentiks' Scott Thometz and dominated from start to finish. Boysen punished Thometz both on the feet and ground for two solid rounds, but a tough Thometz would not be put away. In the third, Boysen had Thometz on the ground against the cage near Thometz' corner and was connecting with a number of punches. Thometz' corner signaled to referee Ryan Hoisington that he was done and when another punch landed, Hoisington stopped it at the 2:37 mark. Boysen is now an impressive 7-1 as a pro.

Aberdeen WA's Justin "Psycho" Larsson took on White Buffalo Warrior's CJ Marsh in a pro 170 lb bout that played out on the feet. Larsson was continually moving forward while Marsh chose to stay on the outside and pick his shots, avoiding getting into a brawl with Larsson who had KO'd him in a previous fight. A relatively even fight, Larsson was the more aggressive of the two, plus he scored a takedown late in one of the rounds. After three rounds, two judges saw it 29-28 for Larsson while the third had it 30-28 for Marsh, giving Larsson the split decision win.

The most crowd-pleasing bout of the night was the pro 170 lb fight between Team Wise's Ben Fodor, aka real-life superhero Phoenix Jones, and NW Elite's Nick Coughran. This was a standup battle that saw wild exchanges throughout, with both fighters connecting and staggering their opponent. Fodor was the more durable of the two and late in the third, he flipped a switch and went into turbo-drive, unleashing an onslaught of punishing blows followed by big knees to the head that finished the fight with just fifteen seconds left.

CSF's Albert Tadevosyan won his pro debut against a tough Ricky Satterwhite, outpointing the West Coast Fight Team fighter with takedowns and effective control on the ground. Satterwhite stayed active, going for submissions throughout the pro lightweight fight, but Tadevosyan was able to shuck off all the attempts. In the end, the judges saw it 30-27, 30-27, 28-29 for a split decision win for Tadevosyan.

Rob "Ironman" Cann ended his 3-fight losing streak by coming out and unloading on Jeff Coleman against the cage before the ref stepped into to stop the pro 145 lb contest at 58 seconds in. Cann moves to 3-3 with the win.

The next Combat Games MMA event will be April 19th with Battle @ the Bay VII at the Swinomish Casino in Anacortes WA. More info at
