Main Event winner Mike Gavronski

An excellent night of fights from first bout to last took place on November 15th at the Emerald Queen Casino with the 98th edition of Battle at the Boat in Tacoma WA. 6 pro boxing contests were decided, with 11 of the 12 fighters hailing from the Pacific Northwest. The main event featured the region's top prospect in Tacoma's Mike "Imagine" Gavrosnki taking on Gerardo "Tin Tin" Ibarra of Houston TX. Both fighters entered with an identical 14 wins, but both were also coming off tough unanimous decision losses and looked to get back in the win column. The ensuing 10-round super-middleweight bout was a thriller and had the crowd cheering throughout. Gavronski was the more effective of the two, staying on the outside and utilizing his reach advantage to score with his jab and well as moving in with solid combos. Ibarra though found success with some big thundering counters that elicited oohs and aahs from the crowd. The pace of the fight did not slow down as it went into the final rounds, with both fighters standing toe-to-toe in the pocket and throwing hard punches. In the end, it was the hometown hero Gavronski who got the judges nod, 97-93, 97-93, 96-94 to the delight of his many fans. With the win, Gavronski is now 15-1-1, while Ibarra falls to 14-2.

22 year-old Cameron Sevilla-rivera of Fife WA has spent his entire young pro career entertaining crowds at the Emerald Queen Casino, racking up 5 wins with 4 KOs inside the casino's I-5 Showroom since November of last year. In Battle at the Boat 98's Semi-Main Event, Sevilla-rivera faced hard-hitting Aubrey Morrow out of Vancouver BC. Morrow took a few years off but got back into the game with a solid victory back in June and entered with 6 wins against 1 loss and 2 draws. The 162 lb catchweight bout between Sevilla-rivera and Morrow wound up being a wild one. In the first, Sevilla-rivera scored with his fast hands, moving in and out with rapid combinations. Morrow continually went forward, showing patience and countering when he could. In the 2nd round, Morrow's power found its mark, as a big right caught Sevilla-rivera and sent him crashing to the canvas. But Sevilla-Rivera got up and then proceeded to turn the tables and stagger Morrow with power of his own. In the third round, Morrow again found his mark and dropped Sevilla-rivera with a head shot. Sevilla-rivera got up in disgust and went back into the pocket and started throwing with abandon. Late in the round though, Morrow went downstairs with a hard body shot that put Sevilla-rivera on both knees in pain, and this time he was unable to beat the 10 count. Morrow gets the KO win at 2:24 of the third round.

Another NW Fighter who's had good success at the Emerald Queen has been Grandview WA's Marcelino Pineda, winning all 4 of his pro fights there by KO, most recently in June with a 1st round knockout of Jared Teer. His opponent for Battle at the Boat 98 was Tacoma's own Will Hughes who also has had success at the EQC, but that was back in 2007, and Hughes had not fought professionally in nearly 7 years. However, there was no ring rust whatsoever with Hughes and the 4-round 144 lb catchweight bout was high-paced throughout with numerous momentum swings. Both fighters found success mixing in their jabs with shots to the body and solid combos. Hughes' power likely made the difference, staggering Pineda on a couple of occasions, and in the end all 3 judges saw the hard-fought contest 39-37 for Hughes.

Vancouver BC's David Robinson edged Spokane's Daryl Gardner in a 4-round Super Middleweight bout that went the distance. Gardner spent much of the fight chasing an elusive Robinson around the ring, trying to land the big punch. Robinson for his part used his quickness, and his reach to land jabs and the occasional right to the charging Gardner. In the end, two judges saw it 39-37 for Robinson, and the third had it even at 38-38, giving Robinson the majority decision win. He is now 2-0 as a pro, while Gardner falls to 2-4.

Adam Querido of Vancouver BC and Wenatchee WA's Mickey "The New Butterbean" White, both had highly successful amateur careers with numerous knockouts between the two of them. In their pro debuts, the two heavyweights both were looking for the same kind of ending to start their paid career as boxers. The fight started slowly with Querido and White feeling each other out and trying to stay away from the other's power. The Canadian started to find his range with the jab and took advantage, having a better reach. White, who came into the fight 30 pounds heavier than Querido, was loading up with his big right hand to end it with one punch, but Querido deftly avoided each attempt. As the fight progressed, Querido's jab and his superior conditioning wore down White, who eventually succumbed to a series of body shots in the corner that forced the referee to stop the bout at 2:52 of the 2nd.

The tone for an entertaining evening of fights started with the opening bout featuring a high-paced 140 lb contest between Portland's "Dirty" Benny Vinson and Aberdeen WA's Jeff "TNT" Hatton, both looking for their first pro boxing victory. The two had met once before, three years earlier in the cage in a pro MMA bout, which was won by Hatton via rear naked choke submission early in the first round. At Battle at the Boat 98, Hatton and Vinson both came out firing, staying in close and letting their hands do the talking. The first two rounds were relatively even with a high output of punches from both boxers. In the third, Vinson started to wear down Hatton with his power punches, staggering him and then finishing him with an unanswered flurry against the ropes for a TKO ref stoppage and revenge for his earlier MMA loss to Hatton.
